Pergolas and trellises are great for climbing vines and tall plants, supporting them as they grow taller towards the sun without snapping their backs in a sad time of their youth.
They're very important to plant growth and very fun to make~! We, ourselves, made two trellises at school with Mr. Munoz the other APES teacher of our school for our garden! Just in case you don't know which one is which, pergolas are those roofed arches as seen in the picture to the left. Trellises are climbing ladders, if defined in the shortest amount of words. And in this post, we'll describe the process we uptook to make the trellises in our school garden!

Just in case you don't know which one is which, pergolas are those roofed arches as seen in the picture to the left. Trellises are climbing ladders, if defined in the shortest amount of words. And in this post, we'll describe the process we uptook to make the trellises in our school garden!
Step 1: Gather Wooden Sticks
Step 2: Mark the Sticks
Step 3: Cutting
Under wary teacher supervision, we began to cut the wood!!! Lin Fei was our most enthusiastic cutter -- so professional that she could become a carpenter!! But anyways, we cut the two marked wooden sticks at the black marks, making thirds. We did it so carefully that any discipline committee member could be proud! |
After cutting two pieces of wood into threes for each trellis, we cut off an end of the other two sticks to make them extra pointy and sharp! It's important to cut them at the right angle to make them able to stab the ground even if the ground was the hardest thing ever -- after all, we want the trellis to stand up! |
Step 4: Assembling the Trellis
Step : Placing the Trellis
If you make hard, pointy stakes, them it'll be easy to just stab them into the ground and smile proudly at your work. For us though, we weren't as good with the machine and made short stubby points. Good thing that the ingenious mind of mankind doesn't just stop there though! We tied the wooden post to the school's very own front gate to make them stand perfectly upright. Now the tomatoes can grow! And our work is done :) |
Easy and fun, right? Great! Now you try it! That was the steps to making Trellises like us! We guarantee that they will be useful and great activities!
